The 40 Year Heer Long Service Award was the highest grade of long service medal issued by the German Army. Far, far fewer of these were awarded, than the lesser grades. It is a very rare award to find.
This one is a zinc, die struck piece. Medal only retains its original, fire gilt finish, on the obverse, while the reverse shows almost no finish remaining.
The original cornflower blue ribbon is still in place, with a pin for wear.
